U.S. Senator from Utah
Willard Mitt Romney was born in March 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He earned an undergraduate degree in English from Brigham Young University and received a JD-MBA from Harvard. He spent over two years in France as a Mormon missionary.
He became a management consultant for a private company, later becoming their chief executive officer, eventually bringing the investment firm to one of the largest of its kind in the nation.
He entered politics with an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. He resumed his CEO position at the investment firm and later became president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics. That effort led to a relaunch of his political career. He was elected governor of Massachusetts, serving four years.
He was a candidate for the 2008 presidential nomination which was ultimately won by Senator John McCain. He made another run for it in 2012, successfully becoming the party’s nominee, but failing in the general election to a second term of Barack Obama. In between, he authored several books, including No Apology: The Case for American Greatness. He again ran as a candidate for president in the 2016 election but the nomination went to Donald Trump.
He was elected to the United States Senate from Utah, assuming office in January 2019.
He is married to Ann Davies and they have five sons. He is active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Utah Senator Mitt Romney has expressed opposition to the opinion written by Justice Clarence Thomas last month that urged the Supreme Court to reconsider its 2015 same-sex marriage ruling. “He’s opened a lot of doors that no other justices walk through,” the senator said.
His comments came as the Senate began considering taking up the same-sex marriage bill that was passed earlier by the House of Representatives. When asked about a possible Senate vote on the House bill, Senator Romney said, “We all know what the law is. I haven’t given consideration to that legislation, in part because the law isn’t changing and there’s no indication that it will.”
He added that “clearly, the legislation from the House is unnecessary given the fact that the law is the same, and we’ll take a look at it as it comes our way.”
